Workers in the Restaurant Industry need paid sick days, it behooves all of us. In my over 25 years of working in restaurants, there were many days I had to go in sick. Not only could I not afford to not go to work – never knowing what I would make on a given day, but rarely do restaurants create a shift schedule that accounts for the possibility of someone needing a day off at the last minute. My worst experience was (while working in one of the fanciest restaurants in Philadelphia) having Strep Throat and my manager not letting me go home because it was Valentine’s Day and we were too busy… “Would you like a side of Streptococcus with your romance?”
